With the help of the Khaganate and their advanced technology, they opened it and discovered it led to the High Wilderness, which is this setting's version of space. There's not much to say about it right now in regards to Sunless Skies, but it's great, although it is less polished and harder than its sequel (I still haven't finished it).Īfter several decades of suffering exploitation and humiliation at the hands of the Masters, the Devils and other powers, during which the rest of the British empire on the surface basically fell apart, the British came across a strange gate, the Avid Horizon. The game alternates between the book-like segments in ports or during events, and exploration ones where you pilot your steamboat across the Zee. You travel across the Unterzee, a huge ocean located in the Neath filled with monsters and mysteries, and die horribly multiple times as you try to explore it and make some profit. In the second game, Sunless Sea, you play as a Zee-captain. Other nations could be found in the Neath, such as Hell, which was of course populated by Devils who wanted to steal humans' souls, and the Khaganate, a group descended from ancient mongols whose city also fell long ago. The city fell near the aforementionned Bazaar, and the Masters basically made it their playground, in various ways. It worked, but in exchange London was somehow transported into the Neath, a huge underground cavern in which the laws of physics aren't quite the same and a lot of weird things can happen. The basic story is that, after the death of her husband Prince Albert, Queen Victoria made a deal with a bunch of shadowy beings calling themselves « the Masters of the Bazaar », in order to revive her beloved.

It's neat, and it's still getting content after all these years so I recommend you look it up if the setting interests you. You wander around London, trying to figure out its secrets. It is similar in structure to a « Fighting fantasy » book : you make choices, you roll dices, and you read a lot.

It all started with Fallen London, a humble free broswer game. If you want to experience Fallen London and/or Sunless Sea completely unspoiled, turn around ye fool ! I'll try to only talk about the essential things and introduce the details as I play the game. It's also why I will not crosspost this on SB.īut before we plunge into the madness and mysteries of the High Wilderness, I must do some exposition, as the setting is quite complex and this is the third game in it.

It's also not incredibly racist, antisemitic and bigoted in general unlike Lovecraft's work, and in fact contains quite a lot of progressive elements, so that's a huge plus. It is, simply put, one of the best pieces of cosmic horror fiction ever created, equal if not superior to Lovecraft's work. You fly around four distinct regions of a fantastical version of space in a steam locomotive, trying to survive and uncover their secrets. Sunless Skies is, to quote its Steam page, a Gothic horror RPG with a focus on exploration and storytelling, set in an alternate history universe where Victorian Britain has started colonising the stars. Due to the complex and lore heavy nature of the game along with my tendency to be quite verbose about things I like, there will be a lot of text, so I'll put the screenshots in spoilers to balance things out and facilitate mobile navigation. Since this is the first time I've done something like that, I'm open to any advice and criticism you can have. Welcome, delicious friends ! On this fine day, I have decided to start a let's play on what might be my favorite game ever : Sunless Skies, by independant developper Failbetter Games.
